NAME: Dimetrodon, meaning “two measures of teeth”Pronounced:  DIE-met-roe-don
Named By: Cope, in 1877
DIET: Carnivore (meat eater); amphibians, reptiles, sharks, and other amniotes.
SIZE: Length: up to 16 feet (2.5 m)
Weight: up to 660 lbs (300 kg)
WHEN IT LIVED: Early Permian period, 280-260 million years
ago.
WHERE IT LIVED: Southwestern and mid-western United States, North America.
FOSSILS: First studied on record by Edward Drinker Cope in the 1870s, most of these specimens were gathered from private collectors and then sent to the American Museum of Natural History.
INTERESTING FACTS: The Dimetrodon is best-known for the large, spiny sail on its back. There are several theories as to the function of this, which includes possible thermoregulation.Dimetrodon is actually more closely related to mammals than they are to any modern day reptile; and are, in fact not dinosaurs at all!
