Pronounced: Zee - fies gla - dee - us.
Named by: Carolous Linnaeus in 1758.
DIET: Carnivore (meat-eater).
SIZE: Average adult height; They commonly reach 9.8ft in length.The maximum length of 14.9 ft and a maximum weight of 1433 lb.
WHERE IT LIVED: Swordfish are found in the Indian, Atlantic, Pacific Oceans. They prefer warmer waters, but they will generally migrate to warmer waters in winter and cooler waters in the summer.
FOSSILS: Xiphias Gladius was first found and described by Carolus Linnaeus who is also considered the father of Taxonomy in the 1700s, he developed a way to name and organize species that we still use today.
INTERESTING FACTS: The swordfish is oviparous and as a result reproduction happens through spawning. A single female swordfish can lay anywhere between 1,000,000 and 30,000,000 eggs at a time.
